The anal reflex, also commonly called the “anal wink”, is a superficial reflex in which the external anal sphincter contracts in response to stroking the skin of the anus or perineum. An intact anal reflex signals an intact reflex arc pathway between the pudendal nerve connected with nociceptors in the skin to the lower sacral segments of the spinal cord.
