Samples collected specifically from the anus using a cotton-tipped applicator (swab) or other type of collection device (e.g., rayon, synthetic, or foam swabs). Differentiated from other collected samples because these are collected at the anatomical location of the anus, as compared to other anatomical locations, such as the rectum (i.e., rectal samples). Anal samples are sometimes referred to as “anal swabs”.
