Forcible tearing away of an anatomical structure or tissue by way of traumatic or surgical means. Avulsions may be described as full-thickness with a complete loss of dermis (e.g., subcutaneous fat visible) or partial-thickness with loss of epidermis (e.g., underlying dermis visible).
