A process by which a regulatory body, nongovernmental agency, or professional association designates that an individual has met predetermined standards as specified by the profession for specialty practice. A title or credential is granted to those who meet the requisite body of knowledge and skills related to the specific role or subject matter. Certification differs from a certificate.
