The cyclic, hormonally generated process that recurs at approximately monthly intervals in non-pregnant women as the uterus adjusts to the non-pregnant state. Results in vaginal discharge of bloody fluid and tissue debris from endometrial shedding, which is triggered by low progesterone levels occurring when an ovum is not fertilized.
