A concept referring to the emotional and physical exhaustion that can affect service providers and helping professionals. It has been associated with a gradual desensitization to patient stories, decrease in quality care for patients/clients, increase in errors, higher rates of depression/anxiety disorders, and increased rates of stress related work absences. The professional’s interpersonal relationships may also be affected (e.g., inability to connect).
