Refers to antiretroviral medications taken prophylactically after exposure, or possible exposure to HIV. Exposure may be occupational (e.g. a needle stick injury) or non-occupational (e.g. unprotected sex with a HIV+ partner, injection drug use). PEP is associated with occupational post-exposure prophylaxis, nPEP is associated with non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis.
