Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. For adults and adolescents, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a routine presumptive treatment regimen following sexual assault/abuse that includes azithromycin. This drug is also commonly used to treat gonorrhea (as part of dual-drug therapy), chlamydia, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other infections involving the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive system.
