A cleft, furrow, or slit in tissues that may occur naturally, or result from pathology or trauma. Anal fissure is a common example, and consists of a tear in the anal tissue that is not naturally occurring and may be due to injury, such as the passing of hard stool or anal penetration. Anal fissure extending beyond the pectinate line may be referred to as anorectal fissuring.
