An acute viral infection affecting the liver; primarily transmitted by the fecal-oral route through ingestion of infected food or water or by person-to-person contact. Uncommon in first-world conditions due to regulation and cleanliness standards. Immunization is available but not administered as a standard in the US except for certain populations, such as healthcare or food industry workers.
