A complex physiologic defensive reaction within the tissues, which the immune system mounts in response to injury, infection, or allergy; characterized by fundamental, nonspecific, hallmark findings of swelling, redness, heat, pain, and sometimes, loss of function. Inflammation is a mechanism for protection and repair.
