The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) and the Venereal Disease Reference Laboratory (VDRL) tests are the most common examples of this testing, which is used to screen for syphilis by detecting antibodies that may be produced in the presence of the syphilis bacterium Treponema pallidum. However, a lack of specificity poses a risk of false positive or negative results.
