Refers to antiretroviral medicines prescribed before exposure, or possible exposure, to HIV. Several studies have demonstrated that a daily oral dose of appropriate antiretroviral medicines is effective in both men and women for reducing the risk of acquiring HIV infection through sexual or injection transmission.
