Any of the hard, bony structural appendages of the upper and lower jaw that are embedded in the gingiva for the purpose of mastication (chewing food). Plural form is teeth. Deciduous teeth are commonly called baby teeth or primary teeth; the first set usually consists of 20 teeth. Most adults have a total of 32 permanent or adult teeth.
