Prior to the sentencing of an offender, courts may allow victims who have been harmed by the offender to provide a written or oral statement. Such statements provide an opportunity for victims to share with the court, and the offender, the harm they have endured as a result of the criminal act. Judges may take into account the statement by the victim when handing down the criminal sentence of the offender.
